Joel L. Smith is the proprietor of Right Time / Right Thing Consulting Services, Inc., a company focusing on Leadership Development, Organizational Goal Setting, Classroom Management Strategies, and Educational Leadership.

He was, until the department was abolished in June 2009, Director, Dropout Prevention / Alternative Education, Broward County Public Schools. Prior to that assignment, he was Director, Middle Schools, Specialist, Dropout Prevention & Alternative Education, and Acting Assistant Principal, Guidance Counselor, Teacher.  Throughout his career, Mr. Smith has had uniformly superior performance reviews.

Mr. Smith is a dedicated community activist.  Among his community involvements are: Board Member, Children's Services Board of Broward County, Board Member, Breakthrough Fort Lauderdale, Board Member, Circuit 17 Juvenile Justice Board, Board Member, Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative, Committee Chair, Florida Attorney General's Gang Reduction Task Force (Region VII), Executive Committee Member, North Broward Prevention Coalition, Regional Director, Florida League of Middle Schools (Region III).

Mr. Smith  is also one of the Executive Committee Members on the current initiative to address Youth on Youth Violence, which facilitated its recent Planning Summit held at Bank Atlantic Center May 26, 2010.  

Joel has been married to his wife, Janie, for 36 years and they have been residents of Broward County for thirty years.  In addition to being a mom, Janie is a Behavioral Therapist, specializing in work with children.  They have two adult children, Josh and Lindsey, who are products of Broward County Public Schools.  Their third "child" is Harold Bienaimer, who became a member of the family more than 25 years ago.
